SPELLBOUND IN SALEM
by Pam Hobbs
His cries are something awful. Three times when brought before the court
Giles Corey refused to plead his guilt or innocence on witchcraft charges, so now
this frail old man has been dragged to a field and buried beneath a pile of bone-crushing rocks. At one point when the pressure causes his tongue to pop out,
someone with a stick handy pushes it back into his head. More screams and he is
silent again, this time for ever....
Salem has pubs and restaurants in historic buildings, and others made to look
historic. Away from the busy waterfront we enjoyed the Beef and Oyster House,
where the oysters were fantastic. Located on the village green, The Hawthorne
Inn (telephone 617-744-4080) provides attractive accommodation in the heart of
town.....
